Cold Brew 101

About: Cold brew is a concentrated coffee with a smooth profile, subtle sweetness and noticeably less acidity than traditional hot brewed coffee. Cold brewed coffee maintains an excellent flavor profile when refrigerated for 7-10 days from the brew date. Cold Brewed coffee is wildly popular, more so than an iced coffee. 

Making Cold Brew: Cold brew coffee is made similar to sun tea. A 12oz bag of our Cold Brew blend coarsely ground is combined with 3 quarts water and allowed to brew for 18-24 hours in the refrigerator. The grounds are filtered from the cold brew, yielding a concentrated coffee drink that maintains its strength when poured over ice on a hot day. Particular coffees are better suited for cold brewing than others, so we’ve chosen a blend of Brazillian and Colombian coffees with tasting notes of chocolate, walnut, and  brown sugar.

Drinking and Serving Cold Brew: This cold brew recipe should be diluted between 50:50 and 70:30 with another beverage, this ratio varies depending on desired strength. Cold brew is served over ice and diluted with water, milk, soy milk or an ice cream like dessert instead of ice.  Sweeteners like chocolate syrup, maple syrup and simple syrup only make the cold brew better and will dissolve nicely in an iced beverage.  Cold brew can also be added to shakes, and other blended drinks. 

Cal’s Mint Mocha Syrup:

  • A handful of garden mint, rinsed and with its stems removed.

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 cup water

  • ½ cup chocolate powder

Mix all ingredients together over low heat. Once all combined and syrupy, strain and store. Refrigerate for up to a week. (if it lasts that long!)
